Faultlines

We, scratched up records
faultlines marring once brand new
smooth skin waiting for the scars
of a lasting love, growing, stretching
shedding old skins to feel always
more, those silvery lines just tokens
of living to see another night
of loving for another day.

Now there is red
always.
Pressing closer, scrambling, scratching
feel something please just let me
Rumblings of a beating heart
beneath my touch under the smooth plates
resting under our skins
moving further apart with every quake
restructuring familiar landscapes
crumbling our careful buildings to the ground
and we run for cover as the earth
we loved so well falls out beneath us.

How I wish these faults would settle,
let us pick up the pieces and fill in the holes,
rebuild in peace and go on living as we were,
stronger than before, one more scar,
just another shed skin laying in the corner
and we, beautiful creatures, raising our heads
under a shining sun and playing on
our song, skips and scratches and all.
