My Inner Courtyard
My inner courtyard
Is a realm only I can reach,
A kingdom that I rule
And there are no boundaries.
My inner courtyard
Is the weep of George's guitar
The warm lilt of Gordon's words
And the scars in John's voice.
My inner courtyard
Is the continuous and comforting tangle
Of my spoken thoughts
That break the meaningless silence.
It is isolating myself
When there is no one to hide from
It is being who I want to be
Away from all the invasive eyes.
When I'm in my inner courtyard
There is nothing to hold me down
My decisions sit in the palm of my hand
And I control all of my choices.
The only security that keeps me safe here
Is the knowledge that no one can reach me
When they see me, I do not, cannot, see them
And my world is as I please.
Take a moment and wish yourself away
Out of the literal world, body and soul
And where do you find yourself?
Your mind.
My mind is the warm, cozy living room
After playing in the cold damp snow
Meeting hot chocolate and the crackling fire
But, only I can go.
I contradict what people say
When companionship is spoken as a need
I say it is only a desire
And being alone is what keeps me free.
