Remember
Do you remember when I fell asleep on the bus,
And you woke me up before I missed my stop?
I could have been stuck there, but I wasn’t.
Do you remember when I bought my milk but
Couldn’t open it? You helped me, every day without thanks.
I could have been thirsty, but I wasn’t.
Do you remember when you made that “Super Dog” book,
And sharpened my sky-blue pencil to the nub?
I could have had that pencil, but I didn’t.
Do you remember when you stood up for me
In the library and we became everlasting friends?
I could have been lonely, but I wasn’t.
Do you remember how we shared our dreams and
We laughed so hard we couldn’t stay in our seats?
I could have been bored, but I wasn’t.
Do you remember when we raced to finish rocket
Math, competitive ‘till the end? Unfortunately, you beat me.
I could have won, but I didn’t.
Do you remember when you called me every
Stinkin’ night to ask about math homework?
I could have had peace, but I didn’t.
Do you remember the “Beethoven Project” and you
Yelled “It’s YOHON!” when I said “Johan?”
It should have gone smoothly, but (of course) it didn’t.
Will we remember these silly memories when we are old and grey?
And these things then—these that have no meaning except to us?
I will.
These fragments, these moments, trapped in a wrinkle of time
Will forever hang;
Waiting to be rekindled, to be lit with a flame of your
Heart
