Fate's Song
Dear lover, my exhausted soul cannot love
Its tethered pieces are poisoned with fear
The door has been locked to my intimacy’s cove
For I’ve seen what passion has to bear.
Entangled in the night’s light we might stand
Or in the bushes: sparse among the trees
In the meadow--in the palm of Fate’s hand
Over which she might sing a light breeze
But one brilliant day would be our last tender embrace
For into our melody would step an aerial fawn
A consuming staccato to our legato space
Our so undivided devotion would be drawn
And her pitch would rise and the crow would fly
As I reached my fingers to your now withdrawn hand
Shaking off memories from history’s eye.
You would’ve never asked for a tailcoat of sand
Dear lover, I would pray you turn the calendar back
Or wish me again to a crook of your heart
But there is no coda on life’s five lined track
And anyways, you wouldn’t be one for my dark
Instead we would set the mountain ablaze
Crimson heat scratching at time’s peeling silk walls
And then we would sink ourselves into the haze
Ashes apart in silenced operatic calls.
Dear lover, my exhausted soul cannot love
Its tethered pieces are poisoned with fear
The door has been locked to my intimacy’s cove
For I’ve seen what passion has to bear.
