Self Portrait at 15
Bob Dylan provides most of my comfort
I wish I knew why
Perhaps it’s just the calm of his voice
or how his melodies feel like a hug
His lyrics the friends who hold my hand
“Don’t think twice, It’s alright”
It’s strange, I suppose
that I rely on music so much
When as a child, I thought it a waste of time
and turned to books instead,
but as a child, I also thought of
Kisses and Coffee
as a waste of time as well
My childlike attention was turned
towards creating dragons
or fairies
or other escapes from the reality
which bored me
My escapes from reality, though,
have escaped me
So I soften it instead
with Kisses, Coffee, Music,
and noticing small
seemingly pointless, worthless
things, with which i'm in love
like the first raindrop
or that look a man gave
a woman from across the room
the feel of my skin on his
the knife i found in his pocket
the feel of his scars on my lips when I kiss them
I then wonder about people-
How they got the way they are,
if maybe she, or he, or I
have all changed
just a little
from that brief conversation
we had on the subway
What do they wonder about?
And are they holding heartbreak?
or sadness on top of everything else?
or has maybe, something made
their load a little lighter today
maybe it’s bob dylan
“All I can do is be me, whoever that is”
