Dancing on the Beach
The water’s edge is cold and calming.
Moonlight strikes the waves like
Colored lights flash against a disco ball.
Scattered across the sand
The drunk and excited offer
Their moaning to the crickets chirps.
The sea moves back and
Back, pulling me toward it and
Drowning all other sounds.
Heat from a nearby fire
Distracts me from the rhythmic
Motion of the sea.
I brush it aside, confident
In my decision. Ready
For the water to take me.
Rivers of black run down
My stained eyes.
The sea will clean those scars.
The drunkards drone on, unaware
Of the lone traveler
Walking toward the edge.
No need to hold my breath,
No need to close my eyes.
I spread my arms and drift away.
