Nighttime Swan
The swan glides at night
when the pond is dark and cool,
its surface like black glass.
The land-dwellers have said goodnight,
but the crickets sing with gusto in the grass
and the owls still howl from the trees.
The swan chooses this time –
the music is hers
alone.
Traversing the pond,
she is grace.
The midnight air fluffs her feathers,
brightens her eyes.
She is exactly where she needs to be.
