Midnight
We heard the sounds of the city
But we saw nothing anymore.
We met on a street of cracked light
You and I
Us two
Us last two
The sky above was dark
And the stars had packed up and fled.
We faced each other squarely
And we cried
But we did not touch
I was afraid of you
And you of me
So we stood five feet apart
(Such an easy distance to cross)
And we wept together
Before turning back into our separate twilights
And when you stopped to call back to me
I was not there to hear.
