I don’t know why I clicked
the link.
The highlighted words
Glared out at me
“Forgot your password?”
They crooned.
I clicked.
A split second decision.

Maybe it was because
I did forget

Not my password,
Not even my username.
I forgot us.
You and me.
You and I.

I forgot when we were inseparable.
You and me.
Me and You.
We were a package deal.

Our pact.
Never fall in love with your best friend.
Not me with you.
Not you with me.
You upheld the pact.
I forgot.

When we got the leads in the school musical I was happy.
When I found out I got to kiss you,
I was happier.
My first kiss,
Who better to have it with?
I pretended,
For your sake,
To be annoyed.
I forgot.

And then I got so wrapped up in pretending not to love you,
I forgot how to be
Your friend.

It was inevitable,
When I introduced the two of you.
You were enraptured. You couldn’t take your eyes off of her.
You were almost as happy as I had been,
Before.

We told each other everything.
But that summer,
I forgot
And slowly
You did too.
You see, it’s not possible to remember something no one else does.
You question it and slowly it dies.
Not with a bang,
With a whisper.
