Princess No Longer
Little girls grow up so quick,
And become women so fast.
They cross the bridge to adolescence,
They never look back at the past.
It starts with wanting to be a big girl,
And do what big kids do.
They don't think about what they're asking for though,
Until it's too late and they've started changing too.
They get cell phones and iPods,
Instead of new toys.
They quit playing pretend,
Then begin kissing boys.
Tiaras become straighteners,
Dolls become profile pages.
They become moody and sarcastic,
As they work through their awkward stages.
Story books no longer matter,
And are replaced with maintaining their weight.
Who cares about swinging or ice cream?
What really matters is who you date.
Coloring books are a thing of the past,
Makeup and short shorts are the way to go.
Best friends break your trust,
And the mirror becomes enemy número uno.
They'll learn happily-ever-after doesn't exist,
And boys are never close to flawless.
Music and books become their escapes,
And their room is resorted to a permanent mess.
They start cutting, crying, and crabbing,
No more rainbows, only swearing.
It doesn't matter how many Webkinz you own,
It's all about what you're wearing.
Soon play dates become parties,
Stuffed animals are substituted by clothes and shoes.
Life suddenly is all about gossip,
Who's hot, what's in, and how to bend the rules.
School used to be cool,
And everybody was your friend.
Now people will stab you right in the back,
Because that time has met its end.
They'll get rejected,
And their hearts will break many times.
They'll also fall in love,
And cross some risky lines.
They'll lose some here,
And gain some there.
They'll find out who's a true friend,
And who honestly couldn't care.
They'll become an adult,
They'll succeed.
They'll chase their dreams,
Figure out what they want to be.
Sometimes they'll laugh,
Sometimes they'll cry.
Life definitely won't be easy,
But the years will fly by.
One day they'll have an angel all their own,
Who is sick of being treated like a kid.
They'll know then how she feels,
Because she's growing up, just like they did.
