Albert Einstein said,

“Everybody is a genius.
But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,
it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.”

She was the fish.
She cannot climb trees.

To herself, she was stupid.

She built a mask.
She forced herself to change

She had to change.

A unique case of
survival of the fittest.

Society forced her to conform.

To herself, deep inside her fishy body,
she was still stupid.

The author's comments:
This piece parallels the pressures of fitting in by comparing a teenage girl to the fish in Einstein's quote. Adolescent years are oftentimes the years when our true identities are hidden by the yearning for acceptance of others, thus leading to conformity. However, the point I wish to portray is the fact that when we conform, we do not feel happy because we are not living to our true selves.
