Blackbird
In the dead of night
A bird sings a mockingbird
Perched on a tree
Innocent and alone
No one stirs or hears
It’s a beautiful song
It sings of injustice
And the warm breeze
The tree is filled with
Hard and cold cement
All of the towns people
Pass by each day
Missing the bird hiding
Beneath the green leaves
But it keeps singing
Knowing someone will hear
Someone hears, someone breaks
Throwing rocks and sticks
Wanting it to leave
Its beloved tree
Everyone comes to watch
Put on display for
All eyes to see
Its dark black crime
One man climbs the
Tree, seeing its broken wing
He nurses it and cares
For it, helping him fly
He lets it go, now healthy
The people all see
BAM, it’s been shot dead
Never to be heard from
Ever, ever again.
