Cracked Lips
She lay in bed with the door unhinged,
her ears stuck out comically from her naked head
I would have laughed
If it was funny.
She gave me a small smile,
her cracked lips bleeding,
and dabbed at her nose with her dirty handkerchief.
We talked
But said nothing
What was there to say?
Before I left she handed me a five pound note
whispered thickly to buy myself something sweet
Oh mum,
Nothing will ever be sweet again
