Picture in the Fire
“We are learning to make fire”
It will show us answers to our hidden questions
Revealing things no one else can ever see
The power of heat rises around us one at a time
I stood behind her trying to see her flames
I only felt heat reaching around her
It finally was my turn to see the magic
I felt the burning air wrapping around my soul
I looked around me
The girl I was watching before now stared at me
Her gaze seemed to be caught in a trap
My leader walked to her side
His eyes glued to the flames dancing around my body
I felt strength pouring into my muscles
I let the fire consume me entirely
I saw colors glowing and exploding
Nothing was making sense yet
Noise began to flow into my ears
The air around me got hotter and hotter
Then everything disappeared like it had never existed
The only thing that remained was a bronze box at my feet
We gathered in a circle discussing our experiences
I walked away from the group to look at my box
I felt eyes on my back and I listened to them
I overheard her tell the group
“It was finally there, after all those years, right in front of him”
Our leader reminded them that it was my time
Theirs will soon come just like mine did
Five years later I sat in that same spot
Teaching new kids how to make a fire I learned years before
