We Saw The Shore
I can still remember that day
Many years ago--
The day we saw the shore
The bees were still gone
The sky was still gray
The air was still smoky
But the shore...
The shore was beautiful
We had been told many times
That there is a place
A place far away from the city
Where the water is still clear
Where fish still swim
Where birds still fly
Where you can forget
About all of this
So we set off, suspending our disbelief
That there really was a place
Where you could still see the shore
We traveled through broken cities
Abandoned buildings
Ghost towns
We traveled quickly
There were times
When I thought we would not make it
But we kept on
Driven by an insane hope
That we could see the shore
Some of us never did
Even through the smoke
The sun still shone through
And beat down on our backs
I was told
That in the old days
The sun was a symbol of hope
And beauty
And I'm reminded of
How simple things must have been
Before the Disaster
Simple and naïve
It must have been months
Before we saw the shore
But I do not care
We saw the shore
The water was clear
The sand was warm and soft
And I knew
No human had ever touched
This corner of the earth
Fish swam
Birds flew
And even though
We only stayed for a day
It was all I ever needed
I can still remember that day
Many years ago--
The day we saw the shore
Yes
We saw the shore
