Rewrite
Looking at you, across the room,
Counting the regrets between us.
Talk so small we don’t even speak.
Time refuses to fly as ghosts from the past glide through my mind.
I’ve got demons, and they all have your face, your voice,
And that unforgettable smile.
Mistakes, I’ve made a few,
But my regrets all start with you.
My hair is longer, your tan is fading,
But my eyes will stay gray,
And your eyes will always be a beautiful, painful memory.
Every time you look at me I could tell you, but I don’t.
Because I’d rather be alone than risk losing what I already gave away.
I try to tell you I made mistakes, but the words stay stuck inside.
I want to scream; yet my voice stays silent.
As I smile at our memories and rewrite our ending,
I wonder, do you think about me?
Or am I inventing a one sided tragedy?
Am I wasting time even thinking you’d care?
The chilling thought that keeps my amends quiet,
If I apologized with my heart on my sleeve,
Would you listen or just leave?
