Step Over It
Step over it.
We step over it. Whether it is torn, or broken, or falling.
Let it sit as stampedes behind our heels push us on.
To not disturb the crowd,
We step over it.
And continue
Until it sinks into the ground at our feet,
Forgotten,
Until we sink in beside it.
And perhaps then—
Only then—
When we have no more hands to reach with,
Or fingers to pluck with,
Or backs to stand with,
Will we want
To reach down and stand it up.
Only when we ourselves are stepped over,
Will we reach down and regret.
