Her Final Plea: Depression's Cage
She hears their laughter and wishes that
The bars of her cage would dissipate
Like her happiness once dissolved before
Her sadly watching eyes, her crumpling body
That lay on the floor of her tiny cell for days
For weeks, for months, for years, for eons
Until she was roused by the children’s’ laughter
And she wishes that she could escape
From her entrapping depression
That has her locked in an airtight prison
As she slowly dies from lack of oxygen
She is tediously suffocating
Wishing that it would finally end
Each day when depression holds out a knife
She considers taking it more and more
The choice to end her life
Looks more right as each day passes
Without hope of ever seeing the light of the sun
Again, and sorrow weighs her down
The cage seems smaller as the hours go by
No one ever comes to say hello
To tell her that she’s worth enough to live
And so her end draws nearer
Seemingly inevitable, and still she writes
Her final pleading note to the world
That bathes in the glow of the sun
A last request for rescue, for aid, and
For the key to depression’s cage
