Earth is Alone
Kicked around like a chewed
Half-swallowed piece of dinosaur meat,
Looking rugged as the porch leaves
Ripped, torn, shredded at the seams
Of a barren widow’s cloak;
They belong to no man at all.
Sleeves are hung loose;
Dangling in desolate autumn wind;
They mimic shoes on a telephone pole.
Arms hang limply, lonely in the wind,
Aimlessly waving within the vast vicinity.
No man declares either witness or war
As they wriggle and flail in the setting sky.
Soon the hues fall dark,
The air frigid, the moon somber;
Earth has the ability to know
It is absolutely alone.
