Dancing
Crowded gymnasium
I came alone
Your friends surround you
But you dance alone
This makes us a perfect pair.
Pushing, shoving through the warm bodies
“a little party never hurt nobody”
I come just as you step back from the dance
The multicolored lights are reflected in your eyes
You knock me over with your beauty.
(let’s pray I didn’t just say that aloud)
A few trivial “hi’s” are all that we need
“I like your dress” “thanks, I like your tie”
Hers is red, strapless, and fabulous; mine is just a tie
But I don’t care about that as long as she likes it.
The song ends; our time is coming up.
I offer my hand just as the ballad begins
The smell of your hair is intoxicating
What do you use in it- L’Oreal, Pantene?
Your friends are all staring; maybe if I spin you around…?
Oh, stop smiling, it’s hurting my eyes
You’re awfully close. Do you like to be hugged?
Well, if you didn’t I don’t think we would be here.
What color are your eyes? Blue? I think so…
Although it’s hard to tell with all the lights turned low
Can you read the nervousness in my face, my dear?
I’ll tell you a secret- not all men are suave.
Sometimes we’re just as gawky as girls
Perhaps even more so- after all, it is our job
To invite you to Homecoming, and that takes strength.
Pity you only get to understand during Sadie Hawkins.
I wish you’d say something- are you afraid too?
Are you worried of sounding stupid, like me?
I don’t care. Her head falls back against my shoulder
We end the dance with one last spin.
You rush back to rejoin your friends, but not before turning
And though no words passed our lips, I can tell
From looking in those eyes (they’re so light they have to be blue)
That you enjoyed the dance as much as I did
And you like me too.
I think I’m walking on air.
