There is frost on the window pane.
I feel the cold breath in the air,
as in the distance, I hear the sound of the Christmas Train-
my dreams quickly float there.

I jump up with great joy.
I run into the home to ask my mother,
“Sure,” she says “I know you are a curious boy.”
As I run out the door, she calls after me: “Be sure to take your brother!”

So, both me and Jack headed down the road to the railroad track.
We make our way to the WestPort train station.
The scene looked as if it could have come right from Santa’s sack.
Seeing the train was a sensation.

When we got to the station, there she stood- the Canadian Pacific Christmas Train.
The engines bright head light cut through the falling snow.
To not behold the sight would be insane.
When I saw the red engine with the decorated cars behind it, my face began to glow.
From down the way came the sound of Christmas cheer.
A band played Christmas carols as people drank hot chocolate.
Santa sat in a box car as a little boy whispered what he wanted for Christmas in his ear.
Santa’s elves were handing out candy canes from their pockets.

I stood in awe of the train and the lights on each of the cars that twinkled in the night.
I listened as the music floated away in the air.
I soon had to leave this beautiful sight-
to have to leave I didn’t think was fair.

I have since gotten older.
Have since moved from my childhood home.
But I always look forward to the day when it gets colder.
Because, even though I can’t see it, nor hear it, I can still remember that December evening with the Canadian Pacific Christmas Train.

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this piece by a cold December's morning and by a picture that I saw online of the Canadian Pacific Christmas Train at the Westport Station in New York state. (Also the location of the poem) I have never seen the train before and so have the same interest as this young boy who wants to see it as well.
