The Perfect Boyfriend
Heaven knows you were far from perfect
Just the right blend of safe and ordinary
A cup of coffee with too much milk
And the spoon revolves slowly
Blending emotions into harmony
A tasteless mix, but intriguing enough to take a sip
Just to experience that small drop of boring
I thought this, but yet
You were shockingly sweet
As if the hand of God dumped in the whole jar of sugar
Without even the need to swirl around a spoon
I enjoyed being saturated with kindness and love
Or perhaps not
I came to know you better
But I seemed to lose myself in the swirling liquid
And I was sucked down into the vortex
Drifting farther and farther away
Reaching out to grasp the rim
But my hand grabs nothingness
And I’m left to drown
I’m no longer sipping
But taking forced gulps
And gasping for air
Do I really know you?
Do I really know myself?
Too quickly my cup tasted bitter
From my own doubt
The cup slips from my trembling fingers
Shattering the heart
Time freezes and I stand alone
A stone-cold statue
Now time beats with my heart
As I attempt to reassemble the cup
My fingers bleed from gathering the sharp shards of glass
On my hands and knees the coffee seeps into my clothes
And I still taste the bitterness
The cup can never look the same
But I’ll try pouring a new cup
Just to taste that intriguing blend
And fall into the warmth
Of the perfect boyfriend
