Dreaming While Awake

little things
and little streets
big families
and big dreams
coming of age is
not far away
but sometimes it is
not close enough
tough decisions are
so hard to make
without family
and without friends
a floating island
off in the sea
casting its lasso
away toward shore
sinking so slowly
down into blue
no one catching
the lasso thrown
all of this may be
just a mirage
just an illusion
of rising water
big things
and little hope
all until
I wake up
