For Brittany
When all hope seems lost,
when everything you know is over,
when all that you've worked for disappears,
when nothing is the same,
when everything has changed,
when the sky turns black,
when the Devil's on your back,
when the weight is crushing you,
when your fingers crack and bleed,
when slicing your wrists isn't enough,
when the pain settles in your chest,
when your heart breaks in half,
when you're testing that rope,
when you're holding the pills,
when you're preparing to jump,
I'll be there.
To stand on the ledge with you,
to pry the pills from your hand,
to untie the rope,
to sew your heart together,
to cut the weight out of your chest,
to hide all the sharp objects,
to wrap a bandage around each finger,
to take the weight upon myself,
to force the Devil away,
to turn the sky blue,
to change everything back,
to make at least one thing the same,
to show you everything you do is important,
to make things never-ending,
to bring hope to you when you have none.
I'll be your rock to stand on
until you're strong enough
to fly away.
And when you do,
I know you won't need me
as much as I need you.
A small smile will creep up my mouth
as a single tear
falls.
I will wear this chain,
the burden I took from you,
to the end of my days.
