Theft For Humanity
A chair.
A blanket.
A bible.
All three objects
I have stolen
but only for
the well-being
of humanity.
The Chair
from a high school.
The Blanket
from a university.
The Bible
from a church.
These three objects
now are mine.
I see her
standing in the cold.
I go to her
and call to her.
“Daughter!”
I say,
“Sit.
“Swaddle yourself
in this blanket.
“Warm yourself
and rest
your weary legs.
“Listen.
And let your soul
be at ease
as I read these words
to you.”
And as she listened,
And as she sat,
her face began
to regain color.
And her smile,
which I saw
for the first time,
blinded the darkness
around us.
