Atop this chain
As we stand atop this chain
Neither united nor acquainted with each other
I cannot help but wonder
Who was so ignorant to believe that we could be trusted
To preserve
To protect
To provide the balance for those beneath us
Some lacking thumbs
Others lacking brains
But all alive just the same
And as we sit here on the throne
Neither crowned nor appointed to power
I cannot help but wonder
When will all the destruction stop or
When will enough be enough, and finally so
Drained
Dried
And damaged, will we be
Overthrown by the forces we try to rule
And as we lay in fields of knowledge
Neither all-knowing nor free of bias
I cannot help but wonder
Am I the only one to notice
Something needs to change before
Everything
We have worked for
Turns to nothing
And something else takes our place
To stand atop this chain
