Heart on My Sleeve
Some say
I wear my heart
on my sleeve,
so then I wonder
if they can see
how bruised
and shattered it is?
Do they see
a tattoo of
cracked shards
splayed out
across my arm
or even a
sickening purple
creeping outward
like a poison
threatening to spread?
Do they see
the dried blood
left behind
after you first
pierced me with
that dull look
in your once
lively eyes?
Or the dribble
of scarlet that still
leaks down to add
to the graffiti
in my skin?
If they did,
I might explain
as a joke
that as I climbed up,
I fell for someone,
and then,
to keep them laughing,
I'll lightheartedly
say that
falling for someone
is painful
because
it is--
just ask
the marled heart
on my sleeve.
