Debt of the Heart
Last night
walking across the little empty parking lot
My feet found something
That my eyes should have noticed first.
Dirty, abandoned
Terribly misplaced in the little empty parking lot
Was a bright red rose
Sullied by the feet of rejection.
Why was it there?..
The little red rose, in the little empty parking lot
Was it lost? Forgotten?
Waiting for love?
I sat down then
all alone in the little empty parking lot
Just like the little red rose
and I reminisced of love long gone.
He loved me
Like I loved the little red rose
But I did not give him the satisfaction
of letting him in my heart.
Forgotten, deserted
Like the little red rose.
I now felt the pain
of what I owed another.
For I was the one
who had abandoned the little red rose
Like I had abandoned him
without even saying
“goodbye.”
