Drunk
Drunk off books and the deepening dark,
I soak in the print and the black
so I'm inebriated with loose boldness
that will keep me upright
when I see you soon
and your very presence will knock me down,
toppling over all the resolve and strength
I'd mustered and stored for so long
in a single sideways glance,
and when our eyes meet
and yours look away,
it'll take with it the breath
that I dare not exhale--
it'll never return it
the way you never returned my heart,
forcing me to turn to another world
only achieved through drinking in
the enveloping stories and possibilities of the world
in order to fill this growing hole,
and so I begin to get
drunk off books and the deepening dark.
