To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.

The mind, she stays cool,
Calm, composed
Like a still, still sea
Incessantly churning within its depths
The mind calculates.

The heart, he rages
Laughs, cries of joy
Wearing himself on his sleeve
The heart yearns feeling
Like oxygen.

And they fight.
Mind poisons Heart
Deceives him, undoes him.
Heart strangles Mind,
Whips her, throws her.

And the eternal battle continues
While they are encased in a body
Opposite poles, held together
One pulls towards the sky
The other towards the ground
And thus, we move on forward.

The author's comments:
We are governed by our hearts as well as our mind; but they are often in conflict. I enjoyed personifying them; thinking of the techniques that they would use to put each other down, and come out on top. Contradictory though they are, we need this conflict to help through the walk of life, and this is what I wanted to depict through the last line of the poem.

Very interesting personification. I like the contrasting roles you gave them, and I couldn't help but smile when I noticed that you made the brain feminine. I tripped a little over the two lines "The heart yearns/ feeling like oxygen." I'm still not sure what it means. But there were other points that I did like. I liked the simplicity of the phrases, and the clipped language. I think it aptly captures the stress of the two wrestling parts. The closing line, "And thus, we move forward" brought it together well, reminding the reader that this battle isn't all bad. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to mean that the struggle moves us forward, or that we move forward in constant struggle, but either one, I feel, applies. Thank you for inviting me to read your poem. Write on!

This has perfectly described practically every single person I know, including myself. The separate personalities of the mind and the heart were depicted very well here and it was enjoyable to read. Great job!

Great job! You used explicit imagery to express your ideas and successfully personified the heart and the mind. I especially enjoyed the fact that you gave the organs genders, as though you are truly telling the story of a heterosexual relationship. However, the piece may be missing something. Perhaps define the irony a bit more, but all and all this is a great work of art!
