"School days are the unhappiest in the whole span of human existence. They are full of dull, unintelligible tasks, new and unpleasant ordinances, with brutal violations of common sense and common decency." -Henry Louis Mencken

Your morning commute began as always,

from the subway to your office.

The you're almost at The World Trade Center,

until there's a boom.

As you're thrown off your feet, you fly,

staring at your office.

Your work floor is a flaming inferno,

you would've been there soon.

Tear spring to your eyes as the second plane hits,

firefighters push past the crowd.

Those were your colleagues,

people you see everyday.

She will not forget.

As your shift at Ladder 3 changes,

you get a call.

The North Tower has been hit,

by a small plane.

You race down the street,

pushing people out of your way.

Streaming into the building,

you shed your gear.

You save some by directing people to the exits,

others jump out windows.

The floor shakes beneath you,

as the tower beside falls.

Your captain realizes the perils,

and orders you out.

But you refuse to save yourself,

when there's more to save.

Most of Ladder 3 was on the 80th floor,

with you on the 40th.

As the tower collapses,

you find yourself buried.

Days later they find you buried,

and tell you the horrid news.

You are one of the few that survived,

from that heroic Ladder 3.

He will not forget.

You began work at security when the plane hit,

never would you have foreshadowed the events.

Ten minutes into the day, the entire building shakes,

and alarms sound.

Evacuating from the Pentagon,

legend becomes reality.

No one thought the Pentagon could be hit,

one of the safest buildings.

With the fire spreading you remember,

your fiancé worked there.

When the fire is out,

they tell you the news.

Your baby will know only one parent,

a mother not a father.

She will not forget.

On your flight to San Francisco,

the plane held only 40.

Little did you know there were only 37,

that were unaware.

The plane takes off and is soaring high,

when the speaker crackles.

Cooperate and no harm comes,

an unfamiliar voice threatens.

Frightened glances are passed,

the plane begins to tilt.

Hurried phone calls are made,

when you decide to fight.

As you speak to your family for the last time,

you get the strength to save America.

You overpower the terrorists,

landing in Pennsylvania.

As the ground rushes up to you,

you say goodbye.

They will not be forgotten.

As the United States experienced trouble,

we banded together.

United as one,

we fell.

United as one,

we rose again.

We will never forget.

The author's comments:
This poem was a project for my social studies class. This poem isn't meant to offend any race, religion, or person, as I know what happened on 9/11 is often a sore subject. I would like to commemorate the people who risked their lives to save others, and the Americans who witnessed it, either in person or on TV.

It is very hard to read about anything that happened on 9/11, but you did a good job. For me I think mostly that it is my mom's birthday. It's not her fault what happened on her 21st birthday. Keep writing!

To love is to be vulnerable; Triumph is born out of struggle; We notice shadows most when they stand alone in the midst of overwhelming light.

So much detail!! i liked it a lot and especially the perfect word choices :) it was really strong and left an impact on me. I share with you my compassion and sincere condolence if you ever lost someone back there. It's so sad to know that there are so cruel people ready to do such thing to others. I really believe that all this what is going on it's a shame cuz we're all one race, we're humans and all one big family so why should we kill each other?! It's a shame. Other than that your poem is great 5/5 :D
