I Want to Know
I want to know
why I wake up in the middle of the night
In summer when I’ve just gone to sleep
Where the things go
that have been echoing
through my mind
when I can’t find them
I want to know
what happens
when I make a sound
in the impending silence of morning
How I found you
or how you found me
with the world so full of everyone else
I want to know
what you see in my eyes
and if I can see the same things in yours
What your name is
how it is spelled,
why it was chosen for you,
and how it feels in my mouth
when I say it aloud
I want to know
what shapes you can see in the clouds
and whether I can see them too
How your feet feel
in the icy river water
with the sun on your back
I want to know
how the Earth smells
when you lie on your face
and inhale its unspoken words
Where your world
is compared to all the others
I want to know
how your mind works
differently than mine
And if our minds
still work the same sometimes
after all the miles have inched their way between us
I want to know
If you remember
What we used to be
