Call it what you will,

but to me it will always be

Christmas Canon

by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra

It will always be the tune

that they play when we sing

“Eucharistic People”

on Thanksgiving Day mass

And it will always be the song

that whispers my name and tells me

“everything will be okay.”

Because it has to be okay,

during the holiday season

Doesn’t it?

No matter what you celebrate

or what you believe in

whether it’s a fat man

rolling down a chimney

or a baby

lying in a manger

or that juicy ham

sitting there on the dining room table

there’s hope that

everything will be okay

and although it may only be October

it’s that binding hope

that I need right now

because right now

I don’t need to believe in anything

besides the fact that

everything will be okay

Recently my mom and I had a somewhat heated discussion about the song that I know as "Christmas Canon" or "Canon in D." My mom said that this particular song was always played at weddings, so that's what it reminded her of. I then explained to her that it reminded me of the Holiday Season, particularly Christmas and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for me has always been the real kickoff for the Christmas Season. Partly because my dad doesn't let us listen to Christmas Music or put up Christmas decorations until Thanksgiving, and partly because the first Sunday of advent follows not long after Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Anyways, Canon has always been played as an intro to the song "Eucharistic People," a tune that we sing in church every Thanksgiving. It is also played constantly on the radio here during Christmas time. It is a song that strongly reminds me of holidays.
