Pretending
The sun beats down on me
Harsh and uncaring
I submerge myself in the pool
Feeling the relief of the water
caressing my skin
I close my eyes
and am transformed.
My long red hair floats and tangles
wild and angry like the sea
Little scales ripple down my spine
and scatter across my hip bones
All the shades of my world under the waves
I am a mermaid
I am powerful
I am beautiful
I am strong
I am -
Gasping for air
My head bursts out of the chlorine
I was under too long.
Now i am just a girl
Pretending to be anything else.
