Genevieve
A Summer is waning
For the seasons are changing
Beautiful is the water
As it awaits the historian's daughter
The girl in the rowboat stands at the front
An exultant jump is all I want
She has a family like no other
Behind her and watching are her parents and her brother
They all witness her enjoying the final sunny days
Before Western Washington turns to its grey and rainy ways
I wasn't really there but I imagine it now
What they were all thinking and I really wonder how
There is the feeling of reflectiveness in the air
That moment when people acknowledge the memories they bear
Everything is concluded and that is when she leaps
Creating a scene so symbolic I hope everyone sees
That joyous moment of jumping into the Sound with a laugh
Frozen in time when someone takes a photograph.

This was inspired by the front page picture of the North Kitsap Herald newspaper that came out this year (the August 29 article). The man in the rowboat is my Social Studies teacher, and he shared that picture with us. It was really beautiful, and the caption made me think about the true feeling of the image. I hope people will acknowledge the importance of thinking and remembering all that they have experienced, and enjoy life as much as possible while they are living it.
