He Was There
You were there for my first crawl,
for when I first walked
for when I began to talk
for my first bike ride
for my first day of school
for my sweet sixteen
for my first day of high school
for my first real love
for my first everything.
You showed me an important value-
to be there for who you love.
Since my dad was never there,
you claimed that space.
And for that, I thank you.
In reality, you are just my brother.
To me, you are who raised me.
You are the only father that I know.
