The Hunt

The cold wind howls, whipping at my face,
I grip my spear and push, have to keep pace.
Our leader signals, we crouch in the snow,
waiting hours for the deadliest blow.
So goes the hunt.

Patience is key, as it comes into sight,
eight feet tall, a monster, it’ll be a fight.
It will feed us for days, help us survive,
a majestic mammoth, sad it must die.
So goes the hunt.

Unaware, it lumbers, searching for food,
walks around our trap; we knew it was crude.
We are the predators, it is our prey,
it only eats plants, for that it must pay.
So goes the hunt.

We get the signal and let out a call,
we launch our spears - hit it - still doesn’t fall.
It tries to run, but it is far too late,
with a final breath it has met its fate.
So goes the hunt.

One must die so that the others can live,
we kill and scavenge for all it can give.
The war of nature and the war of life,
I crouch down, I pray, I clean off my knife.
So goes the hunt.
