Suicidal City Blues
Pour me another shot of bourbon
Sing me another song
Tell me that it’ll all be okay
Tell me all night long
As the moon passes over head
As the city hums and moans
As the people pass all through the streets
As the world turns and groans
The sky pours down its silvery tears
Upon this cityscape
And Manhattan sings all melancholy
As protesters fill the banks
Glass begins to crack and break
As fire fills the cans
Somewhere a bum sits counting stars
Dreamin' of distant lands
In an inner Harlem alleyway
An old man, he sits and chuckles
He’s drinkin’ from some brown paper bag
Cheap gin and hardened knuckles
I begin to see it clearly now
A street lamp’s softened glow
As a tenor sax plays some jazz
So smooth and with the flow
I’m givin’ up propriety
Beggin’ for the knife
Givin’ up society
Come on and end my life
I’m tired of all these people
Can’t seem to stand the noise
Can’t take these conversations
Can’t predict their ploys
I’m beginning to surround myself
Dark and calm and slow
And I’m beginning to loosen my necktie
Come on and lay me low...
