A Careless Cigarette
Sunlight filters through the canopy
Violets and clovers grow, my favorite
I fill my stomach, it is safe here
Rustling! I lift my ears
Simply the wind, still safe
Humming grows
Urgently, I lift my head
Animals break through the clearing
Deer, rabbits, foxes
Jumping, crying, running
Eyes of panic and terror
Running from what?
A glow engulfs the forest
Ash glazes over my eyes
Smoke fills my nose
My lungs choke
The clearing bursts in flame
Running
Far too late, far too slow
My hair singes
Skin blisters
Violets burn
Far, far too late.
