Homefront/Foreignfront
This mask is cracked
It’s been slipping for awhile now
A commander’s wife
It’s not active duty
But it’s a duty all the same
You stand at your post
Back on the homefront
You command your troops
That cluster of frowning children
You make promises you can’t keep
Little white lies that aren’t so little
Daddy will be home soon
June 16, 1944
There comes the knock on the door
The folded-up flag of stars and stripes
He died in Normandy, they say
D-Day stands for Daddy’s Day
Foreignfront
This mask is cracked
It’s been slipping for awhile now
A commander
It’s active duty
But I wish it wasn’t so
You stand at your post
Out on the foreignfront
You command your troops
That cluster of frowning children
You make promises you can’t keep
Little white lies that aren’t so little
We’ll be home soon
June 6, 1944
There comes the gentle nudge
The tattered flag of stars and stripes
You’ll die in Normandy, they say
D-Day stands for Death Day
