I’ve forgotten how to write.
Once upon a time
My paper was a canvas
But now it has shriveled
Into nothing but uninspiring parchment

I can’t even rhyme anymore.
I used to be able,
Now it’s a chore. Or canned.

The thoughts in my head are all muddled
And grey
Lacking life, lacking verve.
Lacking whatever rhymes with grey.

The words don’t flow like they used too.
It’s more than writer’s block.
It’s a blunt, thumping, hammer
That dulls my pencil
And drains the color
From my figurative paint.

I’ve forgotten how to make words cry
Or bleed, or dance along pages.
I’ve forgotten how to stir stanzas
Or pluck words from a dingy old thesaurus
Like ripe berries from a tree.

I’ve racked my brain so many times
Stared at empty documents
On my computer until my eyes go sore.
But still I do not remember.

I’ve forgotten how to write.
