This Year
This year I started to write a book,
This year I also had to ask my teacher to leave the room.
This year I began looking at colleges,
This year my choices depended on whether my parents said yes.
This year I went to an interview for my first job,
And got the job.
This year my work schedule was dictated by my family’s availability and not
My own.
This year my SAT scores weren’t my goal numbers,
But what my teachers believed I should get.
Next year I’ll be preparing to leave for college,
And jump to this mystical place
My teachers call “the real world.”
With the way they reference the real world
As if it’s a place I’ve never seen,
I expect to see dragons and Yoda and Frodo
And finally get my Hogwarts letter that was lost in the mail.
