Where I'm From
I am from two,
the second,
and the spoiled.
I am from warm cookies, brownies, and milk,
from love and from trouble.
I am from a spacious family porch with room for plenty,
and a four person swing (which always seemed to be broken),
and from the isolated bottom bunk.
I am from three,
the second,
and the keep-it-downs.
I am from the “don’t-touch-that”s and the “go-outside”s,
from the fences whose divisions we ignored
and whose low structures begged to be jumped.
I am from a cozy family porch where our shoulders would bump,
and a snug swing (maybe it shrank?)
and from the still isolated bottom bunk.
I am from four,
the second,
and the curious.
I am from dizzying tire swing adventures
and risky jumps off rusted swings,
from the leave-your-brother-alones (that squishy thing is my brother?)
and affectionate time spent on the rocking chair.
I am from a cramped family porch and a crowded swing
--it definitely shrank--
and from the long-awaited top bunk.
