Where I'm From
I am from boxes packed and cars shipped,
an open loft and a kitchen bustling with people,
a scavenging dog stealing bagels off the counter.
I am from changing schools and freshly sharpened pencils,
butterflies on the first day of school,
The struggle of not getting lost.
I am from a family of “give me your phone” and “go read a book”
I am from Dan and Teresa, Ellie, Matty, and Ty.
I am from Darcy, Veronica, and Bailey.
I am from leaving Florida and moving to Wisconsin.
A house with countless bedrooms, not knowing where to find the cookies.
“Hi I am MaryCate, what’s your name?”
I am from “good luck at your game” and “hard work pays off”
Lacrosse practices with sweat dripping down my face.
The crowd roaring when the ball hits the top right corner of the goal.
I am from squished car rides to the airport,
“Keep an eye on your brother”
and “MaryCate, your suitcase is too heavy.”
I am from unpacked boxes and shipped cars,
Massachusetts to Florida,
Florida to Wisconsin.
