With one final glance, he is gone
and you feel an emptiness like the bottom of a black hole.
At first you think, it is just a dream.

But when you get home
silence greets you like your new best friend
And that void that you have felt, just keeps getting bigger.

You convince yourself that he will be fine.
He promised he would come back and he will.
He always keeps his promises.

Then the first letter comes,
saying that he loves you.
And in a flash, it all hits you.

He is gone.
He is not coming home.
He loves you.

Then another letter arrives,
telling about the new life he has
and you feel a small piece of hope.

Every week there is a new one.
It keeps you going every day
just receiving a small piece of him.

But then the letters stop.
Panic sets in.
Your life starts to crumble away like sand.

Then one day, the bell chimes through the house
and in your haze of worry
you get up from your nest of letters.

You open the door
and you cry out.
He is standing with a letter in hand.

This poem is so beautiful. I must admit, I was afraid that the letters stopping meant he wasn't coming back. But then the doorbell rang! And my heart skipped a beat like how it does every weekend when I watch homecoming videos on YouTube. "He is standing with a letter in hand." I wish you could know how much I loved this poem. This poem is amazing; you did a fantabulous job.
