Almost
He almost hugged her
when she started crying, because her heart was broken
Instead, he told her it would be okay.
She almost held his hand
when they walked home in the rain
Instead, she kept her hand stuffed in her pocket
He almost kissed her
when he walked her to her door
Instead, he reminded her to study for the math test
She almost told him her feelings
when he smiled at her in the corridor
Instead, she told him the lunch menu
He almost called her at 2 a.m.
when he couldn’t sleep
Instead, he rolled over and closed his eyes
She almost looked up at him in Math class
when he was looking at her
Instead, she continued with her test
He almost asked if she was free
that following Saturday
Instead, he went skating with his friends
She almost went over to him at lunch
when he sat alone
Instead, she stayed with her friends
He almost messaged her
to ask why they were so distant
Instead, he messaged a girl from his English class
She almost broke down
when she saw him with another girl
Instead, she held her head high, and pushed her feelings aside
He almost ran to her house
and confessed his feelings
Instead, he kissed the other girl
They were almost enough for each other.
They almost made it.
They almost fell in love.
They almost became each other’s.
They were like parallel lines,
always close, but never touching
Almost touching
but never did.

This piece was based on a real life experience. I was sitting in class one day, thoughts of me and this guy, racing thorugh my head, and I remembered all that we had been through, and how things might have been different if "almost" had become "did"
