day after day
i learn to sleep in the dark again
the shadows aren’t your height
and your face is so longer seared in my eyelids.
i learn to wake silently, like a child
i sleep curled around old stuffed animals
mom kisses me goodnight every time and it is safe here
i learn to stop cringing at your name
my friends have forgotten, so i will pretend to as well,
it is so much easier this way
i learn to fall back into myself
settle into my skin, readjust to my bones
recognize the face in the mirror
i am learning to do more than just survive.
