My Daddy

Baby Girl
My Daddy was an angel,
My savior, my hero.
He was always there for me,
Even when I was evil.
One
I am walking all over,
You watch me as I stumble.
I giggle loud and clear,
As you play along holding a camera.
Two
I’m already getting smarter,
An independent lady indeed.
You’re starting back into your career,
And leaving Mommy with me.
Three
My baby sister is the interest
She has my Daddy’s heart.
She never seemed happy,
My Daddy couldn’t part.
Four
My Daddy lost his job,
He lies around the house.
The stench of smoke and alcohol,
Lurking in and out.
Five
My Daddy doesn’t live with me,
He lives all alone,
Mommy says he’s sorry,
But he will never come home.
That’s when it started,
What he did to me.
He can’t even remember,
What happened was a dream.
Six
I go to visit my Daddy,
My sister and me.
He’s still the same as before,
Smelly and lazy.
Seven
Daddy doesn’t clean,
Daddy doesn’t care.
I’ve been keeping us safe and healthy,
I’m the only one who cares.
Eight
My Daddy hit me today,
When I told him we were out of food.
He hates when I disrupt him,
He screams to the moon.
Nine
My Daddy hits me all the time now,
It has become a regular thing.
I can’t tell my Mommy,
I can’t watch it sting.
Ten
We don’t see my Daddy anymore,
My Mommy takes care of us now.
He lost his rights and custody,
But they will never know what really went down.
Eleven
I haven’t seen my Daddy,
In a long time now.
I heard he’s been to court,
To jail, and then back out.
Twelve
My Daddy tries to call,
He sends us letters and apologies.
He says nothing of what he did to me,
He has lost his memories.
Thirteen
My Daddy is in jail again,
He hit a cop or two.
He’s on the edge of poverty,
And death is coming soon.
Fourteen
My Daddy tried to die today,
He’s in the hospital now.
He tells us what happened,
That depression took him down.
Fifteen
Depression starts to feed on me,
I can hardly breath.
Too many pills,
I’m in the hospital,
I just want to leave.
I tell my Mommy what happened,
I tell her every single detail.
I want to get on with my future,
But I can’t without her knowing.
Sixteen
My Daddy went to prison now,
He still sends me letters and cards.
He took the child in me away,
Maybe he’ll remember now.
Seventeen
My Daddy was my hero,
Our bond will never be the same.
The letters keep coming,
But I don’t bother to change.
Eighteen
Dear Daddy,
It’s me.
I’m graduating today,
Do you believe me?
You cannot get to me anymore,
My shield is far too gray.
I’ve built up my strength,
No one can repay.
I am all grown up,
I’m ready to start my future.
But in order to do so,
I must make one thing clear:

Your were my hero,
My angel and savior.
But all heroes have an end,
All angels return to heaven,
And every saviors die.
You just happened to give up,
When trouble came along.
