I was human when they found me,
Human when they tortured the innocence
Out of my simple, childish spirit.

I was human when they taught me
That all humans are the same,
So you must treat everyone equally.

I was human when equality
Became more than just equal treatment,
But the loss of one’s unique identity.

I was human when they taunted me
For not being like them
In the way they acted, dressed, and thought.

I was human when I learned
That humans agreed on equal terms
Only after misery and bloodshed had preceded peace.

I was human when I tried to be human
And think equally to everyone else
Instead of thinking justly.

I was human when society found me,
But no longer am I human,
For I refuse to be the humans they are.
