You could see them

and not know a thing about them
but still feel attached to them

You could hear them
screaming loudly as they played
but you wouldn’t care
because in a week or two
they wouldn’t be in your life anymore

You wouldn’t be in their town anymore
you’d be far, far away
another city, another town,
maybe even another country

And everything you’d ever told them
and everything you’d ever been with them
would be wiped out
they would have never existed

And you’d be on the run again
looking for faces in the shadows
men on street corners
looking for a hint that they found you

And you’d spend all your life
looking over your shoulder
running and running and running
from something that is not there

and you never get to know them
the small town people

You never get to know them
who offer kind welcomes and warm smiles,
them, who lend you a helping hand
and open up their lives to you
The Small Town People

And in every single one of them
you’ll look for a resemblance
of what you’ve been running away from

And when you find a piece of it
you’ll know its time to run away
because if you stay long enough
you’ll have to face what you left behind

So you’ll run again
unconsciously looking for The reason.
the reason to stop
the reason to face your demons

And you’ll look for it
among the people you meet
you’ll look for it
among the places you see
and you’ll hope to never find it.

And so the years pass by,
and your demons follow
everywhere you go
always crawling in the back of your head

Whispering and whispering
that which you don’t want to hear
getting louder and louder
Till you can barely function

And you’ll hope that day after day
that they’ll go away
but never do

And suddenly you’ll find it, the reason to stop
In the most unlikely of places
you find it in the face
looking back at you in the mirror

And thats when you’ll realise
that what’s holding you back is yourself before
So really, what’s there to stop you this time

So you man up,
you grab your weapons
and go searching for the demons
lurking in your past
It’s not pretty, but really when is it?

Your demons will claw at you
your fears will beat you down
and you’ll want to give up
You’ll want to crawl right where you came from

But you’ll look back at your memories
and find the person you were
before you started running
she’ll give you the strength to go on

You’ll fight with all your might
and stand with your head held high
you’ll know the battle is won.

And finally you can walk back home
ready to settle down and start again
because you’re tired of living
the life of a runaway.

Just a bit of writing about running away and self discovery.
